Norcross child care insights: Fetal brain development stages

Posted on 10-13-2014

In just nine months, your child develops a fully functional brain, complete with 100 billion cells. 250,000 brain cells are developed every minute while your child is in the womb. Here’s a guide to how brain development takes place in the three trimesters before birth:

First Trimester

This is a period in which the basic brain structure is formed, including the development of the neural tube, which becomes your child’s brain and spinal cord. Once fully developed, the neural tube starts to change, developing brain and nerve cells that go on to form different structures, including your child’s cerebral cortex.

Second Trimester

During this time, your child’s brain becomes fully developed with the different cortexes. Neurons that connect the brain to the rest of the central nervous system begin to grow, communicating through electrical impulses with the rest of the body. Your child will begin exercising motor skills and controlling the limbs. In the final month of this trimester, the brain will divide into two separate hemispheres.

Third Trimester

This trimester is all about your child’s brain increasing in size. Your child will be storing experiences during this time, developing the motor skills and reflexes needed for breathing and sucking. In the final two months before birth, your child’s brain develops separate cortexes for different stimulation and learning areas. By the ninth month, a child’s brain will have as many neurons as an adult brain.

Your child’s brain at birth is full of incredible potential. This potential can only be realized through a loving, nurturing home and caregivers.
