Allergies are a very real part of infant and child care. Allergies can remain dormant and arise unexpectedly. If a child’s parents suffer from allergies, then the child’s risk of suffering is significantly increased. Parents can help minimize the development of infant and child allergies to some extent.

Food allergies

Around three million infants across the country suffer from food allergies today. The most common of these allergies are related to eggs, tree nuts, soy, fish, and wheat. Allergies cannot be prevented, but you can help minimize the development of some food allergies. You can pinpoint an allergy by selectively introducing your child to foods that tend to cause allergies. If you notice any reaction, be sure to consult your pediatrician for confirmation.

Nasal allergies

Nasal allergies are also commonplace in infants and young children. There are a number of things which can cause nasal allergies, such as mold, dust mites and pet fur. Take notice when your child gets a runny or itchy nose, and red eyes, which are are all common symptoms. If your child wakes up in the morning with these symptoms, then perhaps it is a dust mite allergy. The best way to prevent and control these allergies by keeping the room clean. Wipe down blinds, vacuum the carpet, and manage humidity to reduce the risk of mold, which can be dangerous.

Pet allergies

Children can develop allergies to pet dander, especially that of cats and dogs that shed, as well as other furry animals. The signs are similar to other allergies: runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and red or watery eyes. If you have a pet at home, try keeping the pet out of the child’s room to see if your child improves. If you do not have a pet at home, your child may have been exposed at school or at another location. Allergies tend to show up quickly, but consult your pediatrician if you suspect your child has a pet allergy.
